Chronology of the Sister Church Relationship among St. John's
and Los Heroes de la Fe

We at St. John’s are blessed to be able to share our lives and out resources with our brothers and sisters at Heroes.  Here are some of the events from our five year relationship:

In Spring of 1999, we shared in helping the community recover from Hurricane Mitch.

In the Fall of 1999, St. John’s raised over $8000 to help Heroes obtain electricity for every house in the community. The entire community is working together with a goal of completing the project by August 2000.

In August 2000, a delegation from St. John's visited Heroes and conducted medical check-ups as well as bible school lessons.

In the spring of 2001, following two devastating earthquakes in El Salvador, St. John's was one of the sponsors of the Caravan of Hope which sent supplies to the Lutheran communities in El Salvador.

During the summer of 2001, Kevin, a small boy with a serious heart condition, came with his mother to Milwaukee so that he could obtain heart surgery.  St. John's paid for their transportation, a local hospital donated the medical care, and Kevin and his mother lived with St. John's families during their time in Wisconsin.

In December 2001, 5 families including 8 children visited El Salvador and Los Heroes.  On this trip, we brought sewing machines and material to support a new sewing cooperative in the community and are sponsoring a project to build houses in the community which will resist the tremors from El Salvador's too frequent earthquakes.  More than 31 soccer balls and hundreds of jerseys were donated to support a youth soccer program.

In October 2002, Linda Muth and Vonda Dress spent 9 days in the community and had the chance to visit almost 50 families.

In November 2002, Bishop Medardo Gomez preached at the 40th Anniversary celebration at St. John's, and his visit was followed by a 3 week visit by Pastor Santiago from Los Heroes.

In February 2004, a delegation from St. John's and Galilee church traveled to Los Heroes. The week featured a three day medical clinic and a baptism service at a nearby river.

In August 2004, Pastor Santiago visits St. John's and speaks at the Global Mission Event of the ELCA in Milwaukee.

In late 2004, the Container of Hope project began, a project to send a 40 foot long shipping container full of medical supplies, library books, and items for sewing and wood-working cooperatives. Read more about it here.

In February 2005, we repeated the medical clinic in the community.

In July 2005, the Container of Hope arrives in El Salvador.
