Local and Global Service

May Outreach Focus - Newborn Kits

This is our 21st year of participating in this service project, and St. John’s has donated over 10,000 kits over the years! The kits will be assembled in July (date still to be decided) & shipped to developing countries to be used by midwives, birth attendants, & new moms.

To assemble the kits, the following are needed:

ž monetary donations (to purchase diapers & towels in bulk and to cover shipping costs)

ž receiving blankets

ž baby shirts/onesies

ž Ivory Bar Bath Soap (4 oz.)

ž Ziploc style bags (2 gallon).

We do not need any more towels, wash cloths, or diaper pins for this year.

Please put all items in the Service Cart (in the fellowship hall at the end of the counter.) All monetary donations should be put in the lockbox by the staff mailboxes or in the offering with newborn kits in the memo.

ELCA Hunger Appeal

The world provides enough food for all, but more than 800 million people around the world face chronic hunger. We believe in a God of abundance, so as a church, we live out our call in baptism to strive for a just world where all are fed. ELCA World Hunger is our church wide ministry to end hunger and poverty. We walk alongside our partners and companions in the United States and more than 60 other countries. Your gifts to ELCA World Hunger address hunger and poverty around the world with creative and courageous action. St Johns is recognized as one of the top donating churches to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. For more information visit: https://www.elca.org/hunger

Bread for the World

Bread for the World i a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.  Moved by God's grace in Jesus Christ, we advocate for a world without hunger. Bread members send letters and emails, make phone calls, and visit their members of Congress about legislation that addresses hunger in the U.S. and around the world.  Bread equips its members to communicate with Congress and to work with others on advocacy.  It educates members on hunger-related isses and inspires members to be legislative activists as a way of putting their Christian faith into action.

St Johns has an Offering of Letter weekend each year, usually in April. 2019 will be our 12th year.  The 2019 campaign urges our government to accelerate progress toward ending hunger by increasing fudning for global nutrition programs and asking Congress to increase funding for the nutrition and health of mothers, infants, and children.
