March Outreach Focus -

Luthern Manor Cookies and Friends

Luther Manor is a senior living community on 17 acres in Wauwatosa. It provides a full continuum of care for 450 residents in independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, adult day programs and hospice care. The organization was founded in 1961 by a collective of 70 ELCA congregations including St. John’s.

Congregations remain involved today through the
Friends of Luther Manor. An important and longstanding project of the Friends is the Cookie Carts. The cookies bring a touch of love as volunteers serve coffee and conversation every morning to the residents. They are truly touched and delighted to receive them!

The Friends campaign, which consists of a $5 per person donation, if desired, funds items which greatly enrich the lives of the residents unable to be met by the general budget. Luther Manor is proud of the fact that no resident has been asked to leave because of an inability to meet the full cost of their care and housing. Friends is important to that commitment.

Cookies will be collected all month. Stop by the table in the narthex to become a Friend!

Some of the local and global ministries at St. John's:

Hope Center Monday Meal Program

St. John’s members help prepare and serve a noon meal every Monday at the Waukesha Hope Center. We serve soup, sandwiches and lots of extras including homemade cookies.  Want to participate? Sign up on the narthex bulletin board for a week that fits your schedule. Contact Brian Cranfill with questions. For more information about the Hope Center visit https://hopecenterwi.org/

Loaves and Fishes Meal

Served at the Hope Center, Loaves and Fishes is a meal for the homeless and hungry in Waukesha. St. John’s is assigned 2-3 Sundays each year to prep and serve this meal. Our dates for 2020 are February 16 and October 4. Want to help prep or serve this meal? Watch for a sign up sheet on the narthex bulletin board. Direct questions to Dawn Williams.

Hope Center Project Move

The Hope Center accepts donations of household items (i.e. furniture and appliances). These items are then given to clients. Project Move uses volunteer teams from the community to pick up and deliver the items. St. John's has two teams; led by Mike Hintz and Chris Klink. Extra muscle power is always welcome. Please contact them if you are interested in helping with this ministry - as a regular or as a substitute. The assigned 2020 dates are:

01/18 ... Mike

03/07 ... Chris

04/25 ... Mike

06/20 ... Chris

ELCA Hunger Appeal

The world provides enough food for all, but more than 800 million people around the world face chronic hunger. We believe in a God of abundance, so as a church, we live out our call in baptism to strive for a just world where all are fed. ELCA World Hunger is our church wide ministry to end hunger and poverty. We walk alongside our partners and companions in the United States and more than 60 other countries. Your gifts to ELCA World Hunger address hunger and poverty around the world with creative and courageous action. St Johns is recognized as one of the top donating churches to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. For more information visit: https://www.elca.org/hunger

Bread for the World

Bread for the World i a collective Christian voice urging our nation's decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.  Moved by God's grace in Jesus Christ, we advocate for a world without hunger. Bread members send letters and emails, make phone calls, and visit their members of Congress about legislation that addresses hunger in the U.S. and around the world.  Bread equips its members to communicate with Congress and to work with others on advocacy.  It educates members on hunger-related isses and inspires members to be legislative activists as a way of putting their Christian faith into action.

St John's has an Offering of Letters weekend each year, usually in April. 2020 will be our 13th year.  The 2019 campaign urged our government to accelerate progress toward ending hunger by increasing fudning for global nutrition programs and asking Congress to increase funding for the nutrition and health of mothers, infants, and children.
